April 27, 2018- Emporia State baseball won game one on Friday 8-1 over Northeastern State. The Hornets took advantage of four RiverHawks errors for the win.

After retiring batters in the first inning the Hornets got on the board first with one run on one hit in the bottom of the inning. Brian Grove walked to lead off for the Hornets and advanced to second when Bryce Fischer was hit by a pitch. Mason Brown drove home Grove with a single to left field that advanced Fischer to second and put the Hornets up 1-0 after one inning.

The RiverHawks got on the board in the top of the second with a home run from Jaxon Phipps to lead off the inning and tie the game at 1-1. After exchanging outs for two innings the Hornets took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Brandon Bachar lead off the inning for the Hornets with a double to left center and advanced to third on an error by the short stop. Grove walked and stole second before Fischer was walked. Brown hit a sacrifice fly to advance the runners and score Bachar. Kaden Shaffer reached first and advanced around the bases to third on a throwing error by the short stop. Grove and Fischer both scored on the play for the Hornets to go up 4-1.

In the bottom of the sixth the Hornets took advantage of a RiverHawks error to score two runs on one hit. With two outs, Bachar reached on an error by the first baseman and was driven home with a home run from Grove to extend the Hornets lead to 6-1 over the RiverHawks.

The Hornets took advantage of another RiverHawks error in the bottom of the eighth scoring two runs on two hits with one error. Bachar walked and advanced to third on a fielder's choice error by the short stop with Grove reaching first and advancing to second on the error. Mack Gowing singled to second base to drive home Bachar and was caught stealing at second. Fischer singled to the pitcher to score Grove and end scoring for the Hornets at 8-1.

The Hornets had six hits on the night led by Mack Gowing with two hits and one RBI. Brian Grove, Bryce Fischer, Mason Brown and Brandon Bachar each added one hit for the Hornets.

Seth Holman started on the mound for the Hornets and pitched the complete 9.0 innings allowing just one run on six hits with 11 K's in the game.

The Hornets will be back in action on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. as they take on Northeastern State in game two of the weekend series.
