EMPORIA STATE BASEBALL COMPLETES SWEEP OF SBU WITH 18-8 WIN IN SEVEN INNINGS

Hornets defeat Bearcats 18-8

March 4, 2018- Emporia State completes the sweep against Southwest Baptist with an 18-8 win in seven innings.
 
After the Bearcats opened the game with three runs in first inning, the Hornets tied the game in the bottom of the second off of RBI hits from Tate Kastens and Mack Gowing.  The two teams would trade runs in the third inning to keep the game tied 4-4.  The Bearcats broke the tie in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs in the inning.  In the bottom of the fifth, the Hornets were able to score four runs to regain the lead.  The inning was highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Fischer.  In the bottom of the sixth, Kastens hit a three-run home run and Fischer got his second home run of the day on a grand slam to give the Hornets a 16-7 lead.  After the Bearcats picked up a run in the top of the seventh, the Hornets were able to score two runs in the bottom of the inning as Fischer scored his seventh RBI of the day to get the run-rule. 
 
Bryce Fischer had a big day at the plate with seven RBI on five hits, including two home runs for the Hornets.  Tate Kastens was three for four with 5 RBI and a home run while Mack Gowing had three runs on three hits in five at bats. The Hornets combined for 18 total hits to get their 18 runs on the day. Tanner Cairns pitched five innings allowing seven runs on nine hits with five K's to pick up his second win of the year.
 
The Hornets are back in action as they travel to Pittsburg State on Friday, March 9.  First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
