March 28, 2018- Emporia State Baseball fell 9-1 on Wednesday to Washburn in the first meeting of the Turnpike Tussle. The Hornets are now 15-12 on the season, 6-8 in the MIAA.
After exchanging outs in the first inning the Ichabods got on the board in the top of the second with a solo home run to take the lead. The Ichabods got two runs in the top of the third and four in the fourth to extend their lead to 7-0. After exchanging outs in the fifth inning Washburn finished their scoring in the top of the sixth with two runs to lead 9-0. The Hornets lone run came in the bottom of the ninth when Kaden Shaffer scored on a wild pitch.
The Hornets had eight hits in the game led by Shaffer and Brian Grove each with two hits in four at bats. Mack Gowing, Bryce Fischer, Brandon Bachar and Jack Wilson each added one hit for the Hornets.
Adam Thies started on the mound for the Hornets and pitched 3.1 innings allowing five runs on seven hits before being replaced by Jacob Tetuan. Tetuan faced three batters allowing two runs and three hits before being replaced by Drew Scrimsher. Scrimsher pitched 2.2 innings allowing two runs on two hits before being replaced by Brendan Janes. Janes pitched 0.2 innings allowing no runs and no hits before Connor Burns came in to finish the game. Burns pitched 2.1 innings allowing no runs and no hits.
The Hornets are back in action on Thursday March 29 as they start a three game series against Fort Hays State. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
