March 23, 2018-The #40 Emporia State men's tennis team defeated Lindenwood 6-3 while the Hornet women lost to the Lions in their third 5-4 decision of the season.
Men's Action
Matheus Mota and Patrick Cameron won the first match 8-3 at #2 doubles before Lindenwood evened it with an 8-5 win at #1. Taylor Nelson and Janne Jacobi gave Emporia State the advantage going into singles with an 8-6 win at #3 doubles.
Nelson made it 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-3 win at #5 singles before Charles Gortzounian dropped his first match of the season 7-5, 6-3 at #2 singles. Cameron made it 4-2 with a 6-1, 6-2 win at #4 singles before Anton Levanovich clinched the match with a 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) win at #6 singles.
With the win the #40 Hornets improved to 10-3 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA.
Women's Action
Emporia State split the two doubles matches played with Shannen Meyer and Silvana Caceres winning 9-8 (5) at #2 doubles while Kaley Clark and Sarah Durham fell by the same 9-8 (5) score at #1 doubles.
With only four players, the Hornets trailed 4-1 going into singles play. Clark won at #1 singles 6-0, 6-3 and Durham picked up a 6-4, 6-0 win at #2 to pull within 4-3 in the dual. Caceres fell 6-2, 6-3 to give the match to Lindenwood before Meyer finished the dual with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 win at #4 singles.
With the loss, Emporia State falls to 1-7, 0-4 in the MIAA with three of the conference losses coming by 5-4 scores.

Emporia State will play host to nationally ranked Southwest Baptist squads on Saturday. The men's match will be a top 40 match up between the #40 Hornets and the #16 Bearcats, while the women will take on the #27 SBU women. Both duals are set to begin at 1:30 p.m. at the EHS Courts.
