March 10, 2018- Emporia State baseball got the 3-1 win on Saturday afternoon against Pittsburg State. The Hornets went 1-2 in the weekend series.
After exchanging outs for the first two innings the Hornets got on the board first with two runs in the top of the third and would never trail in the game. The Gorillas lone run came in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Hornets. The Hornets concluded the scoring with one run in the top of the ninth inning to clinch the win 3-1 over the Gorillas.
At the plate the Hornets were led by Mack Gowing with one run on two hits in two at bats. Mason Brown, Bryce Fischer, Kaden Shaffer and Max Laney each added one hit for the Hornets while Fischer and Laney added one run each.
Tanner Cairns started on the mound for the Hornets and got the win allowing one run on four hits with five K's in six innings before being relieved by Mason Leclair. Leclair got the save for the Hornets pitching three innings allowing just two hits with three K's.
The Hornets will be back in action March 17 as they play host to non-conference opponent Minnesota-Duluth in double header action at Trusler Sports Complex.
