EMPORIA STATE TAKES GAME ONE THURSDAY 7-1 AT NEWMAN

Hornets win 7-1 over Jets

February 15, 2017- Emporia State took game one (7-1) of the three game series on Thursday at Newman. The Hornets will play host to the Jets for games two and three on Saturday and Sunday.

The Hornets got on the board first in the second inning after neither team could score in the first. Mason Brown was brought home by an RBI fly out from Tate Kastens before the end of the inning. The Jets tied the game in the bottom of the third after holding the Hornets scoreless in the top of the inning. The Hornets took a 3-1 lead on a double from Mack Gowing in the top of the fourth that brought home Trevor Turner and Mason Brown. Emporia State extended their lead to 7-1 with four runs in the sixth inning. Trevor Turner scored on an RBI single from Garrett Francis. Francis and Mack Gowing would later be driven home by Brian Grove to earn a three run home run to cap the inning for the Hornets.

Seth Holman started on the mound for the Hornets and pitched six innings allowing just two hits and one run with nine K's. Holman was replaced by Taylor Thompson in the seventh inning. Thompson pitched one inning allowing one hit before he was replaced by Connor Burns. Burns faced two batters, walking both before being replaced by Jacob Tetuan. Tetuan finished the game for the Hornets allowing one hit while striking out three batters. Holman receives the win for the Hornets brining him to 1-1 on the season.

At the plate for the Hornets Trevor Turner had three hits and scored two runs in four at bats. Brian Grove had the Hornets lone home run bringing in three RBI. Mack Gowing had two hits and two RBI in three at bats. Mason Brown, Kyle Lopez and Garrett Francis each added one hit for the Hornets.

Emporia State will be back in action on Saturday February 17 at 1:00 p.m. as they host Newman in game two of the three game series at Trusler.
