February 1, 2018 – The 29th ranked Emporia State baseball team fell 6-1 Thursday to #35 Southern Arkansas in the season opening game at the Air Hogs DII Classic.
It was a quick start for the Hornets in the first inning as Bryce Fischer put them on the board with a two out home run. Seth Holman made the one run hold up until the fifth inning. The Muleriders got two runners on to start the inning and scored on a ground out and sac fly to take a 2-1 lead.
Holman allowed a lead off double and a single around a sac bunt in the seventh before being relieved by Jacob Tetuan. After giving up a single and hitting a batter, he got out of the jam with a strikeout and flyout to leave the bases loaded. Jacob Richardson and Mark Fontenot hit back to back homers to start the eighth for SAU and chase Tetuan. Drew Scrimsher was greeted with a lead off double by Jansen McCurdy and an RBI single from Kane Koenigsed that made it 6-1.
Bryce Fischer led the Hornets at the plate with his solo home run while Mack Gowing and Kaden Shaffer each picked up two out singles. Seth Holman went 6.1 innings and allowed three runs on six hits with four strikeouts. Jacob Tetuan allowed two runs on three hits in 0.2 innings while Drew Scrimsher finished the game, allowing one run on four hits in 1.0 innings.
The Hornets will be back in action Friday at 7 p.m. as they take on Oklahoma Christian on day two of the Air Hogs DII Classic in Grand Prairie, Texas.
