LADY HORNETS OPEN SEASON WITH 68-60 WIN OVER #20 SOUTHWESTERN OKALHOMA

Emporia State begins Toby Wynn era with win over nationally ranked foe

November 9, 2018-The Lady Hornets used a 15-3 run at the end of the first quarter and start of the second to propel themselves to a 68-60 win over #20 Southwestern Oklahoma on Friday night in Shawnee, Okla.
 
Emporia State scored first on a three-pointer from Jessica Wayne but SWOSU responded with a 12-2 run to take and early lead.  The Bulldogs led 21-13 with 1:38 left in the first period when the Lady Hornets went on their 15-3 run.  Six different Lady Hornets scored during the run as Emporia State took a 28-24 lead with 8:17 left in the second quarter.
 
The Lady Hornets led 40-32 with 2:47 left on Emily Miler's fourth three-pointer of the half, but the Bulldogs scored the final four points to close within four at the break.
 
SWOSU's Hayden Priddy hit one of two free throws to open the third quarter before Emporia State went on a 10-0 run to take a 50-37 lead with 5:50 left in the period.  The Bulldogs would close the quarter on a 6-0 run before Kali Martin hit one of two free throws to give the Lady Hornets a 51-43 going to the final ten minutes of action.
 
Jessica Wayne scored eight of Emporia State's 13 points in a 13-4 run as ESU took their biggest lead of the night at 66-51 lead with 4:45 remaining.  SWOSU scored the next nine points to close within 66-60 with 2:00 left but Miller and Tiana Moala each hit one of two free throws for the final margin.
 
Jessica Wayne led Emporia State with 19 points while Emily Miller added 17 points.
 
Emporia State will take on host Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. in the final game of the MIAA-GAC Challenge in Shawnee, Okla.

The Lady Hornets are now 83-51 all-time against nationally ranked NCAA Division II schools with a 35-15 record in neutral site games.
