November 23, 2018-The #24 Lady Hornets got a career high 18 points from Kali Martin in a 66-60 win over Ark.-Ft. Smith in the White Auditorium debut for Emporia State.
The Lady Hornets trailed 12-9 with 4:21 left in the first quarter but then closed the quarter on an 11-0 run. Five different players score during the run as Emporia State took a 20-12 lead into the second quarter.
The lead would reach 14 points on a Martin 3 pointer with 13 seconds left in the half but the Lions scored the final four points of the frame to make it 35-25 at the break.
Ark.-Ft. Smith outscored Emporia State 17-16 in the third quarter as the Lady Hornets hit just five of 14 shots, none of them from beyond the three point line.
A Tamera Gully layup pulled the Lions within four points at 55-51 with 4:58 left in the game. Jessica Wayne hit one of two free throws out of the under five media timeout and then got two steals on back to back possessions and fed Martin for a pair of fast break layups to push the lead back to 60-51 with 3:42 left in the game. Emily Miller and Tyra Jones combined to hit three of six free throws in the final 26 seconds as the Lady Hornets held on for the 66-60 win.
Kali Martin went six of ten from the field and four of six from the foul line for a career high 18 points. She also had a career high five steals on the night. Martin was joined in double figures by Tyra Jones with 15 points while Jessica Wayne had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds to go with six assists and four steals.Â
The Lady Hornets are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they play host to Northern State. The rematch of the 2016-17 NCAA Tournament first round match up is set to tip at 3:30 p.m. in White Auditorium.
