BACK IN KANSAS
Emporia State comes back to Kansas after opening the season in Minnesota at the MIAA/NSIC Challenge. The Hornets travel to Wichita to take on the Jets of Newman on Saturday, Nov. 17.

LAST TIME OUT
Emporia State opened the season 1-1 at the MIAA/NSIC Challenge in Marshall, Minn. After opening the tournament with an 83-74 win over #20 Southwest Minnesota State, the Hornets fell 99-63 to Sioux Falls on day two of the tournament. Malik Hluchoweckyj led the Hornets with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Grant Shell joined him in double-digits with 11 points on 4-7 shooting, 3-6 from beyond the arc.

THE COACHES
Craig Doty is in his first season at Emporia State. In just two seasons at Graceland Doty went 49-22 and led the Yellowjackets to the NAIA Division I National Championship in the school's first trip to the national tournament at Kansas City's historic Municipal Auditorium. Prior to his time at Graceland, Doty spent four years as the head coach at Rock Valley College in Rockford, Ill.  His Golden Eagles won two national championships and appeared in three straight NJCAA Division III title games.  He rolled off three straight 30 win seasons, including national championships in 2014 and 2016, to finish with a 113-28 record. In six seasons as a head coach at the NAIA and NJCAA level he is 162-50 with three national championships. This is his first meeting with Newman University.
R.J. Allen is 14-16 in his second season as head coach at Newman. He is 0-1 against Emporia State as a head coach.
ABOUT THE HORNETS
Emporia State opened the season 1-1 at the MIAA/NSIC Challenge in Minnesota. The Hornets are averaging 73 points per game on .417 shooting from the field. They are shooting .245 from beyond the arc and .704 from the free throw line. Malik Hluchoweckyj took lead for the Hornets averaging 18.5 points, 4 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game with just 3 total turnovers. Returning senior, Hassan Thomas averaged 10 points and 6 rebounds for the Hornets.
 
ABOUT THE JETS
Newman was 14-14 last year and went 10-6 in the Heartland Conference. They have six returning player from last years roster. The Jets average 74 points per game on .443 shooting, .262 from byond the arc. They shoot .677 from the free throw line. Marshawn Blackmon is averaging 21.3 points and 8.0 rebounds in 31 minutes per game for the Jets. Dametrius Walker averages 13.7 points and 3 rebounds.

SERIES HISTORY
This will be the 31st meeting between Emporia State and Newman with the Hornets leading the all-time series 21-9 over the Jets.

LAST TIME VS NEWMAN
Emporia State defeated the Jets 85-80 in White Auditorium. At the half, the Hornets led 44-27, but the Jets fought back in the second half with 5-11 shooting from beyond the arc to make it a close game down the stretch. Brandon Hall had a game high 28 points for the Hornets on 11-18 shooting while Ben Ayre led the Jets with 17 followed by Dametrius Walker with 16.
