October 7, 2018- Emporia State Soccer defeated Southwest Baptist 1-0 on Sunday at the ESU Pitch. With the shut-out win, the Hornets remain undefeated at home and continue Emporia State's best start in program history.
In the scoreless first half, the Hornets out-shot the Bearcats 11-2 with 4-2 shots on goal. The Hornets took four corner kicks in the first half while the Bearcats took none. After the break, the Hornets came out on the attack but both teams remained unsuccessful through most of the second half. In the 81st minute, Rachel Marshall sent a header into the back of the net from a corner kick sent in by Jacki Martinek to give the Hornets the 1-0 lead. The Hornets would hold on to the lead for the remaining nine minutes for the 1-0 win.
The Hornets out-shot the Bearcats 21-11 in the match, with 8-5 shots on goal. The Hornets also were awarded 11 corner kicks while the Bearcats only had two in the match. There was one yellow card in the match on Emporia State's Shelby Keyes in the 67th minute of the match.
Rachel Marshall scored the lone goal of the match for the Hornets while Jacki Martinek had the only assist. Jillian Patton played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Hornets with 8 saves to record a shut-out.
The Hornets will be back in action on Friday, October 12 as they travel to Edmond, Okla. to take on Central Oklahoma.
