October 5, 2018- Emporia State Soccer takes 2-1 win over Missouri Southern at the ESU Pitch on Friday. With the win, the Hornets remain undefeated (4-0-0) at home during the 2018 season.
Both teams got off to a slow start in the first half with no stats recorded until a shot came in the fifth minute of the match. Despite out-shooting the Lions in the first half 7-6, the Hornets would go into halftime trailing 1-0 as the Lions' Courtney Marten scored on an assist from a deflection from Bailey Belcher in the 27th minute.
The Hornets came out firing in the second half with the south wind at their back and would out-shoot the Lions 13-4 in the period. The Hornets tied the match at 1-1 in the 74th minute when Makayla Brady sent a header into the back of the net on an assist from Ashlyn Lakin on a free kick from near midfield. With time running down, Rachel Marshall took a pass from Daniela Cardona and with 1:13 left on the clock, she gave the Hornets the 2-1 lead as she sent a shot into the back of the net from about 15 yards out.
McKayla Brady scored her second goal of the season in the match while Rachel Marshall's game winning goal was her fifth goal of the season. Chiara Soergel started and played the first half in goal for the Hornets with one save and one goal allowed. Jillian Patton finished the match in goal after starting the second half.
The Hornets will be back in action on Sunday as they play host to Southwest Baptist at the ESU Pitch.
