Emporia State has recorded the best season in school history and enters the MIAA tournament as the #3 seed. The Hornets have earned a first round home match for the first time in program history and will face #6 seed Northeastern State on Oct. 31 at the ESU Pitch.
THE COACHES
Bryan Sailer is 61-66-21 in his eighth year at Emporia State and is the winningest coach in program history. He has a career record of 120-89-23 that includes coaching four years at the community college level.
Chase Wooten is in his eighth season as the head coach of the women's soccer team at Northeastern State.
LAST TIME OUT
The Hornets wrapped up their regular season with two wins at Washburn and Nebraska Kearney over the weekend. At Washburn, the Hornets defeated the Ichabods with a 2-0 shutout. Kennedy Hoffman scored her fourth goal of the season to put the Hornets on the board in the 35th minute of the match. Rachel Marshall extended the Hornets lead to 2-0 with her team leading seventh goal of the season. Jillian Patton recorded her sixth shutout of the season in the match.
At Nebraska Kearney, the Hornets took the 3-0 shutout win over the Lopers. Hoffman again scored the opening goal for the Hornets on a rebound shot in the 22nd minute. Gaby Crowell extended the Hornets lead to 2-0 just seven minutes later when she took an assist from Hoffman in a break away situation. Jacki Martinek capped off scoring for the Hornets with 7:25 remaining in the match on an unassisted goal from the left wing about 15 yards out. Patton recorded her second straight shutout and her seventh of the season in the 3-0 win.

Emporia State is 13-4-1 on the season, 8-3-0 in the MIAA recording the best win record in program history. The Hornets have outshot opponents 284-189 this season with 121-85 shots on goal with a 36-17 score total.

The Hornets have 12 players with at least one goal led by Rachel Marshall with seven followed by Kennedy Hoffman with five, Maria Walden and Jacki Martinek with four, Tanna Benefiel, McKayla Brady, and Aislinn Hughes each with three and Shelby Keyes and Gaby Crowell with two goals. Four players add one goal each for the Hornets. Jillian Patton has played 1487:05 minutes for the Hornets, starting in 16 games. She has seven solo shut-outs and 61 saves. Chiara Soergel has played in three games, 154:45 with seven saves and two total shut-outs.
ABOUT NORTHEASTERN STATE
Northeastern State is 10-6-2 on the season, 4-5-2 in the MIAA The RiverHawks have outshot opponents 253-225 on the season with 138-111 on goal. Mariah Nicolet leads the RiverHawks with nine goals followed by Paulina Chavez with six and Valeriia Pankratova with five. Brennan Hockett has played 1658:47 in goal with 83 saves and four shutouts.
HISTORY AGAINST THE RIVERHAWKS
In the last meeting, Emporia State fell 1-0 to Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Ok. The Hornets were shutout for the only time during the 2018 regular season. The RiverHawks lead the all-time series 6-3-0 over the Hornets.
2017 MIAA TOURNAMENT
Emporia State fell 4-0 to the top ranked and eventual national champions, Central Missouri. Abby Rhodes scored the first goal just 2:58 into the match. The Jennies took a 2-0 lead in the 13th minute when Baylie Edwards scored off a deflected kick from a Hornet defender. Rhodes second goal came with under ten minutes left in the half. Rhodes completed her hat trick in the 56th minute as UCM advanced and the Hornets season ended with the 4-0 loss.
UP NEXT
With a win, the Hornets advance to face the winner of Central Missouri vs. Lindenwood in the semi-final round. Second round games will be held at the highest remaining seeds home venue.
