October 14, 2018- Emporia State Soccer fell 1-0 on Sunday to Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla. This is the first shutout loss for the Hornets have taken since a 4-0 loss to the eventual 2017 national champion Central Missouri on Nov. 1, 2017. It is also the first loss the Hornets have taken on a Sunday since Oct. 22, 2017 in a 3-0 loss to Missouri Western.
The Hornets opened the game as the aggressor taking two shots in the first six minutes of the match. Northeastern State would strike early to take the lead as Paulina Chavez took an assist from Paige Lorenzo to give the RiverHawks the 1-0 lead. The RiverHawks held the 1-0 lead for the remainder of the first half.
The second half was a defensive battle for both teams with 11 total shots taken and no goals scored. The RiverHawks held on to their 1-0 lead to take the win over the Hornets.
The Hornets were out-shot 10-9 in the match despite taking 5-3 shots on goal. Each team recorded 11 fouls in the match while Emporia State took five corner shots and Northeastern State took four.
Shelby Keyes and Rachel Marshall led the Hornets in shots taken with two each while five other Hornets took one shot each. Jillian Patton played the full 90 minutes in goal with two saves.
The Hornets will be back in action on Friday, October 19 as they take on Lindenwood at the ESU Pitch to kick off homecoming weekend. The Hornets are currently in fourth place in the MIAA and will need to win to guarantee the chance to host a first round postseason match.
