October 19, 2018- Emporia State Soccer defeated Lindenwood 1-0 on Friday at the ESU Pitch. With the win, the Hornets continue their undefeated season on their home field and tied the program record for win in a single season.
The first half of the match was a defensive battle on both ends of the field. The Hornets faced four shots in the first period with one save while taking eight shots in the half. The score remained tied at 0-0 into the break.
In the second half, the Hornets went on the attack and would out-shoot the Lions 9-2 in the period. In the 80th minute of the match, Rachel Marshall sent a pass ahead from near midfield to lead Aislinn Hughes into a shot from about ten yards out to give the Hornets the 1-0 lead. Hughes goal, her third of the season, would prove to be the game winning goal in the match.
The Hornets out-shot the Lions 17-6 in the match with 8-2 on goal. Emporia State also took ten corner kicks to the Lions two. It was a physical match with the Hornets receiving 13 fouls while the Lions received 11. For yellow cards were awarded in the match to the Lindenwood head coach and Alaina White and Emporia State's Gaby Crowell and Shelby Keyes.
The Hornets were led by Aislinn Hughes' lone goal in the match while Rachel Marshall had the lone assist. Hughes and Kennedy Hoffman each took four shots for the Hornets while Maria Walden took two and seven other Hornets took one shot each.
The Hornets will be back in action on Sunday as they take on defending national champion, Central Missouri on senior day at the ESU Pitch.
