September 15, 2017-In the first Turnpike Tussle of the 2017-18 school year, the Emporia State soccer team defeated Washburn 2-1 on Friday night in Topeka.
Ashlynn Summar got the Hornets on the board 16:31 into the match when she put in a rebound off the post for the first of her tw goals.  She added an insurance goal less than eight minutes later on another rebound shot off her own blocked shot.
Washburn would finally get on the board with under nine minutes left on a transition goal by Paige Swanson.
The Hornets outshot the Ichabods 8-7 for the match with a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks as Emporia State improved to 4-1 on the season.
Emporia State will make their home debut on Sunday, September 17 against Ft. Hays State. Kick-off from the ESU Pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
NOTES:
Summar had the first two goal match by a Hornet since Kennedy Hoffman scored twice in a 4-0 win over Southwest Baptist on October 7, 2016.
They are the fastest back to back goals by a Hornet since Shannon Thomas scored 35 seconds apart in a 6-1 win over Missouri Southern on October 27, 2013.
