HORNET SOFTBALL SPLITS DAY ONE OF MIAA TOURNEY

Emporia State loses 3-0 to Central Oklahoma but picks up 11-4 win over Missouri Southern

April 27, 2017 – The eighth seeded Hornets fell 3-0 to first seeded Central Oklahoma in the first game of the MIAA Tournament on Thursday followed by an 11-4 win over fourth seeded Missouri Southern. Emporia State is now 31-25 on the season.
 
BATTLE WITH THE BRONCHOS
In game one against the Bronchos, Eryn Stockman started the game efficiently, striking out four through the first three innings, two in the first, and allowing just one hit.
 
The Bronchos took their lead 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Emporia State attempted an answer but left the bases loaded in the top of the fifth inning. Central Oklahoma scattered two more runs in the fifth and sixth inning on the way to a 3-0 win.
 
Katie Yoakum hit two for three for the Hornets. Eryn Stockman pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

RALLY IN RUNS
The Hornet scored four runs on four hits in the first inning to take a lead 4-2 over the Lions after one complete. Sarah Glass had a two RBI single in the first inning to help Emporia State in the rally. The Hornets took a 5-2 lead from a Hailey Cope RBI single in the second inning. Missouri Southern would score another run in the bottom of the second for Emporia State to maintain a 5-3 lead. The Hornets allowed the Lions just one more run on the way to an 11-4 win. Emporia State had two runs in the third, fifth and seventh innings to propel them to the win.

Katy Rae Nordman hit three for four in game two, joined by Caitlin VanVleck going two for three with three RBI. McKenna Davis hit two for two and scored three runs against Missouri Southern while Katie Yoakum and Hailey Cope each went two for four. Eryn Stockman pitched the first 4.0 innings to improve to 22-13 on the year. Stockman allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits with two walks. Holly Hinkel relieved for the Hornets, allowing one run on two hits in the final 3.0 innings.

UP NEXT
Emporia State will face Pittsburg State at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 28 to continue play in the MIAA tournament. The Hornets will play on Integris Field.
