March 25, 2017-Tanner Cairns tossed a three hit shutout for #8 Emporia State as the Hornets defeated Neb.-Kearney 7-0 on Saturday at Glennen Field in the Trusler Sports Complex.
The Hornets gave Cairns all the support he needed with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Alex White singled with one out and went to third on Mason Brown's single before Ryan McBroom was hit by a pitch to load the bases. White scored the first run on a wild pitch before Brown and McBroom came home on a throwing error that allowed Daniel LaMunyon to go to second.
Emporia State added three more in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double by Brown, an RBI triple from McBroom and an RBI single from LaMunyon. The final run came in the seventh when Brown walked, went to third on a BJ Dean single, then scored on McBroom's ground out.
Jacob Richardson hit a lead off single for the Lopers and was then caught stealing allowing Cairns to face the minimum over the first 3.2 innings. Dallas Schramm got the second hit for UNK with two outs in the fifth and Easton Edmond collected their third single with two outs in the fifth. Cairns then retired the final 13 batters he faced. He finished the three hitter with nine strike outs and no walks.
The Hornets will go for the series sweep of the Lopers on Sunday afternoon at Trusler. First pitch is set for 12 noon on Glennen Field.
