February 23, 2017 - The Emporia State softball team swept previously undefeated St. Cloud on day one of the St. Cloud Indoor Tournament, winning game one 2-1 and run-ruling the Huskies 10-1 in game two. The Hornets improved to 12-8 on the season.
GAME ONE
Emporia State plated the first run in the second inning when Jacie Stephens singled up the middle, scoring Sarah Glass. The Hornets took a 2-0 lead in the third inning after Marly Carmona stole home. St. Cloud scored their single run in the fifth inning, getting a chance to take the lead in the seventh inning when they had bases loaded with one out. Jessica Goerger then lined out into a double play, Caitlin VanVleck relayed in to get Samantha Boettcher out at third. Glass and Stephens each hit one for two in game one. Eryn Stockman improved to 7-4, pitching a complete game. Stockman allowed only one run on ten hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
GAME TWO
The Hornets scored three runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Emporia State plated two runs in the third and four in the fifth en route to a 10-1 run-rule over the Huskies. The Hornets had 16 hits to St. Cloud's two hits. VanVleck went three for four with two runs while Danielle Sprinkle went three for three with three RBI. Katy Rae Nordman hit two for three. Glass and McKenna Davis each hit two for four, Glass with three runs scored. Holly Hinkel improved to 3-4, pitching all 5.0 innings with one walk and one strikeout.
UP NEXT
The Hornets continue play in the St. Cloud Indoor Tournament on Friday, Feb. 24 in a double header against Sioux Falls. First pitch will be at 11:00 a.m.
