October 8, 2017-Emporia State scored three goals in under 30 minutes to overcome a 2-0 deficit and come away with a 3-2 overtime victory at Missouri Southern on Sunday afternoon in Joplin, Mo. Olivia Miller had the Golden Goal for the Hornets just 1:21 into overtime.
Emporia State fell behind in the first half as the Lions got a goal from Sarah Tatum in the 36th minute to take a 1-0 lead into the break. Missouri Southern then took a 2-0 lead on a goal from Brooke Ishmael in the 54th minute.
The Hornets started the comeback with a goal from Tanna Benefiel in the 64th minute. It is the third straight game she has scored in. Savannah Hallier tied the score with 15:18 left in regulation off an assist from Leah Mettam.
Miller's game winner then came on the first scoring opportunity for either team in the overtime. It is the biggest deficit the Hornets have overcome in a win since Sept. 24, 2005 when they scored twice in the final 15 minutes of regulation on the way to a 3-2 victory against Northwest Missouri.
For the match Emporia State outshot Missouri Southern 16-12 with a 9-6 edge in shots on goal and a 4-0 advantage on corner kicks.
The Hornets continue their road trip on Friday the 13th when they take on #2 Central Missouri. Kick-off from the South Rec Complex in Warrensburg, Mo. is set for 7:00 p.m.
