October 29, 2017-A 7:04 second scoring drought in the second quarter put Emporia State in a hole they could not climb out of in a 69-49 loss at Kansas on Sunday in Allen Fieldhouse.
The Lady Hornets, who were playing without injured seniors Addie Lackey and Kyrstie Miller, sophomore Daley Handy and volleyball player Tatum Graves, scored the first points of the game on a pair of Tyra Jones free throws and led 4-2 with just under six minutes left in the first before KU took a 16-11 lead at the end of the period.
A Tiana Moala jumper cut the Jayhawk lead to 16-13 52 seconds into the second quarter, but it would be the last Lady Hornet points until Jacee Kramer hit a three-pointer with 2:04 left in the half. Kramer's three cut the lead to 13 points and KU took a 31-16 lead into the break.
The Lady Hornets went on a 9-2 run to cut the lead to 40-30 with 2:47 left in the third quarter. The Jayhawks answered with a 10-2 run of their own to go back up 50-32 with 1:08 left in the period. Jessica Wayne hit one of two free throws with 53 seconds left and then hit a jumper with ten seconds remaining to pull the Lady Hornets within 50-35 going to the fourth quarter.
The Jayhawks took their biggest lead of the night at 62-39 with 5:38 left following a 10-2 run before coasting to the 69-49 victory.
Emporia State was led by Jacee Kramer with 17 points while Emily Miller added 15 points and six assists. They were joined in double figures by Tyra Jones with ten points and nine rebounds.
The Lady Hornets continue their tour of Sunflower State Big 12 schools on Friday, November 3 when they travel ot Manhattan, Kan. to take on Kansas State. Tip-off of the rare men's and women's double header is set for 5:30 p.m.
NOTES
Kramer's 17 points would tie her career high if this were a regular season game.
The Lady Hornets were just ten of 21 from the free throw line while the Jayhawks went just three of nine.
Despite sporting six player at least 6-2, Kansas only outrebounded Emporia State 39-34 on the night.
