EMPORIA STATE VOLLEYBALL DROPS TWO MATCHES ON OPENING DAY

Hornets lose to Drury and Mary on Friday

September 2, 2016-The Emporia State volleyball team went 0-2 to start the season at the WU Invitational in Topeka, Kan. on Friday.  The Hornets fell 3-0 to Drury and 3-0 to Mary on the first day of the two day event.

DRURY DOWNER
The Hornets struggled at the start against the Panthers but showed a bit of a rally late before falling 25-15, 25-15, 25-23 in the first match of the day.
Shayla Cotman had five kills on .556 hitting with three block assists for Emporia State.  Josie Williams had a team high eight kills while Jamie Hauptman had seven kills for the Hornets against Drury.

SOMETHING ABOUT MARY
Emporia State's match with Mary was much closer than the 3-0 score indicates.  The Hornets fell behind 6-0 to start but went on a 7-3 run to get back in the set.  The Marauders then took a 17-9 lead before Emporia State answered with an 11-5 run to pull within 22-20.  The teams played even over the final six points as Mary took a 25-23 win. 
Neither team took more than a four point lead in the second set, with the Hornets leading 19-15. Emporia State had three set points after taking a 24-21 lead only to see Mary score four straight to get their own set point. The Hornets fought off two set points before falling 28-26 to go into a two set deficit.
Emporia State trailed 15-11 in the third set when Mary went on a 10-1 run to take a 25-12 win and sweep the match.
Shayla Cotman has seven kills on .357 hitting with a pair of block assists to lead the Hornets.

BACK AT IT
The Hornets return to action at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday when they take on Midwestern State in Lee Arena.  They will wrap up the two day event at 1:30 p.m. against Quincy.
