September 18, 2016-Emporia State freshman Nicole Dietrich scored the game winner with less than two minutes left in the first overtime as the Hornets upset #16 Ft. Hays State 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Hays, Kan.
DEFENSIVE STRUGGLE
Both teams turned in outstanding defensive efforts, with just 11 shots total in regulation and only five on goal.
CHANCES
The Hornets had chances to score at the end of both halves. Dietrich had a shot with under two minutes left in the half that could have put the Hornets on the board and then Maria Walden had a shot deflected near the post by Tiger keeper Abbie Flax with less than ten seconds left in regulation.
THE GAME WINNER
Emporia State used a pair of freshman on a break away to score the game winner. Tanna Benefiel took the ball the length of the field and was able to hold up long enough for Dietrich to get in place for a give and go in the box on Flax. Dietrich delivered the game winner into the bottom right corner for the Golden Goal.
SAILER ON THE WIN
