NON-CONFERENCE CONFERENCE MATCH
Emporia State begins play against MIAA opponents with a pair of non-conference games against Washburn and Ft. Hays State.
 
LAST TIME OUT
After not scoring in their first three matches, Emporia State had their best offensive showing in since 2013 in a 5-1 win at Colorado-Colorado Springs on Sunday afternoon. The Hornets outshot the Mountain Lions 28-10 with a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Tanna Benefiel got the Hornets on the board for the first time this year with an unassisted goal into the upper right corner in the 25th minute.  Just over seven minutes later Ashlynn Summar found Maria Walden on the left side to give Emporia State a 2-0 lead.  Elizabeth Andersag made it 3-0 with an unassisted shot to the right post with just 1:25 left until the half.
Summar recorded her second assist in the 49th minute when she connected with Jacki Martinek to give Emporia State a 4-0 lead.  A little over a minute later UCCS finally got on the board with a goal from Lo Vyvlecka.  Maddie Taylor supplied the final goal for the Hornets in the 83rd minute from McKenzie Koch for the final 5-1 margin.
Emporia State took a season high 28 shots with ten of them on goal. 
 
THE COACHES
Bryan Sailer is 33-46-17 in his sixth year at Emporia State and is the winningest coach in program history. He has a career record of 92-69-19 that includes coaching four years at the community college level. He is 5-2-2 against Washburn and 0-5-3 against Ft. Hays State.
Chris Jones is 7-11-5 in his second year at Washburn. He is 1-1-0 against Emporia State
Craig Shaw is 55-39-8 in his sixth year at Ft. Hays State. He is 5-0-3 against Emporia State.
 
SCOUTING THE HORNETS
Emporia State is 1-2-1 on the season but have out-scored their opponents 5-3 on the season. Five different players have scored a goal on the season for the Hornets. Yadira Rivera has played an MIAA high 382:33 minutes in goal this year and has allowed just three goals. 
 
SCOUTING THE ICHABODS
Washburn is 2-2-0 on the season after winning their last two matches.  They have out-scored their opponents 7-3 on the year.
 
SERIES HISTORY
This will be the 26th meeting between the two teams in the soccer version of the Turnpike Tussle. Washburn leads the all-time series 14-8-3 but Emporia State is 5-2-2 over the last nine matches.
 
LAST TIME AGAINST WU
Emporia State saw their chance to host a first round MIAA Tournament game disappear with a late 1-0 loss to Washburn at the EHS Pitch.  Most of the match was played on the Hornets attacking side of the field as Emporia State was credited with 20 shots and four corner kicks to just nine shots and one corner for Washburn. After a scoreless first 75 minutes in the rain, the Ichabods scored on a Morgan El-Attrache goal with 15:29 left to take a 1-0 lead.
 
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Ft. Hays State is 4-0-0 on the season entering the weekend. They have outscored their opponents 17-1 on the season.
 
SERIES HISTORY
This will be the ninth meeting between Emporia State and Fort Hays State. The Tigers lead the series 5-0-3.
 
LAST TIME AGAINST FHSU
Emporia State fell 1-0 to Fort Hays State in Hays, Kan. Emporia State had ten shot attempts on the day, keeper Abbie Flax saving six for Fort Hays. Fort Hays had six shot attempts, Cassi Moosburger converting one in the 71st minute from Silvana Romero that would put the Tigers ahead for the win.
 
UP NEXT
Emporia State will return to the ESU Pitch next weekend for a non-conference match with Neb.-Kearney on Frioday and their MIAA opener in rematch with Ft. Hays State on Sunday.
