EMPORIA STATE SOCCER ERUPTS FOR FIVE GOALS IN WIN AT UC-COLORADO-SPRINGS

Hornets get frist win of season

September 11, 2016-After not scoring in their first three matches, Emporia State had their best offensive showing in since 2013 in a 5-1 win at Colorado-Colorado Springs on Sunday afternoon. The Hornets outshot the Mountain Lions 28-10 with a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal.

FIRST HALF BARRAGE
Tanna Benefiel got the Hornets on the board for the first time this year with an unassisted goal into the upper right corner in the 25th minute.  Just over seven minutes later Ashlynn Summar found Maria Walden on the left side to give Emporia State a 2-0 lead.  Elizabeth Andersag made it 3-0 with an unassisted shot to the right post with just 1:25 left until the half.

POURING IT ON
Summar recorded her second assist in the 49th minute when she connected with Jacki Martinek to give Emporia State a 4-0 lead.  A little over a minute later UCCS finally got on the board with a goal from Lo Vyvlecka.  Maddie Taylor supplied the final goal for the Hornets in the 83rd minute from McKenzie Koch for the final 5-1 margin.

THE NUMBERS
Emporia State took a season high 28 shots with ten of them on goal.  After going scoreless in their first three matches, the Hornets have now outscored their opponents 5-3 on the season in four games.

HISTORY LESSON
The five goals are the most scored by the Hornets since a 6-1 win over Missouri Southern on Oct. 27, 2013 and the first time since then that five different Hornets have scored in a match. The five goals are the most scored by the Hornets in a road match since a 5-0 win at then Missouri-Rolla on Oct. 15, 2004.

Emporia State will make their 2016 home debut on Friday, September 16 when they play host to Washburn.  Kick-off for the Turnpike Tussle is set for 4:00 p.m. on the ESU Pitch located on the north end of the Emporia State campus.
