May 12, 2016-Emporia State got a complete game out of Tyler Stubblefield and three RBI from Daniel LaMunyon in a 10-3 win over Central Oklahoma to open the MIAA Tournament in St. Charles, Mo. on Thursday.
For the fourth straight game the Hornets fell behind early and rallied for a win. Jake Dyer led off with a triple to right center and came home on Jacob Borrego's single to give teh Bronchos a 1-0 lead after two batters. A double play and a pop ended the inning with no further damage.
The Hornets finally broke through in the fourth when Derek Francis led off with a single, Evan Koehler walked and Tucker Perkins singled to lead the bases. Wade Hanna then worked a walk to tie the score before LaMunyon doubled to right center to score two runs and give Emporia State a 3-1 lead.
Perkins singled with two outs in the fifth and scored on Hanna's double to left center to put the Hornets up 4-1. They kept the runs coming in the sixth when LaMunyon reached and went to second on a throwing error before going to third on a sac bunt by Taylor Steen. Dalton Wheat, who had extended his hitting streak to 22 games in the first inning, hit a sac fly to plate LaMunyon for a 5-1 Hornet lead.
After giving up the first inning run, Stubblefield settled down and allowed just three hits over the next six innings. He recorded a strikeout to end five of those six innings. The Bronchos added a run in the eighth to pull within 5-2 before the Hornets erupted for five runs in the eighth inning. After a Levi Ashmore walk LaMunyon drilled a triple to left center to get a run back. Steen followed with a single to score LaMunyon. Wheat then singled and BJ Dean walked as a pinch hitter to load the bases. Evan Koehler hit a sac fly to make it 8-2 before Ryan McBroom singled to score Dean. Hanna finished the scoring with a single to left to give the Hornets a 10-3 lead.
Stubblefield came out for hte ninth and after a fly out, gave up a home run to TJ Sparr that hugged the foul pole in left field. He then struck out the final two batters to get the complete game.
LaMunyon was two for five with three RBI, two runs scored, a triple and a double. Hanna was two for four with three RBI while Perkins went three for three with two runs scored.Â
Stubblefield improved to 9-1 on the season as he recorded nine strikeouts and allowed three runs on nine hits with two walks. It was the first nine inning complete game by a Hornet since Dakota McKaskle defeated Northeastern State on May 9, 2014 in the second round of the MIAA Tournament in Springfield, Mo.
The Hornets will take on Washburn on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in the second round of the MIAA Tournament at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
