April 24, 2016-After begin held to just one hit through the first seven innings, Emporia State had six base runners in the final two but could only score twice in a 4-2 loss at Lindenwood.
The Hornets were held without a run in the top of the first and the Lions were able to get an run in their half of the inning on two singles for a 1-0 lead. That would be all the scoring until the sixth as Emporia State's Matt Slauter and Lindenwood's Connor Law combined to allow just three hits, all singles, over the next four innings.
The Lions upped their lead to 3-0 in teh sixth on a walk and two outs later a two run homer by Drew Quinones. Slauter then gave up a single but picked off Kyle Teter to end the inning. Shane Davies relieved Slauter to start the seventh and gave up a lead off walk. A sac bunt moved Rayce Singbush to second and Jackson Fuller singled him in for a 4-0 lead. After another single Tevin Renken relieved Davies and got a strikeout and ground out to end the inning.
Emporia State broke through in the eighth as Evan Koehler was hit by a pitch to start the inning and went to second when pinch hitter Tucker Perkins reached on an error. After Wade Hanna lined out Levi Ashmore was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Derek Francis gave the Hornets their first run when his single plated Koehler. Jordan Plank, who was running for Perkins, scored on a wild pitch before the inning ended on a ground out and fly out.  After getting two Lions out to start the bottom of the eighth, Renken allowed a single and hit batter before getting a strikeout to end the inning.
With one out in the ninth Dean was hit by a pitch and Koehler singled to bring the go ahead run to the plate in the person of Alex White. A 6-4-3 double play ended the game as Emporia State fell 4-2.
Dalton Wheat reached base twice with a single and walk to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. Koehler, who sat out Saturday's game, was one for three and reached base another time when hit by a pitch and scored a run. Slauter took the loss allowing three runs on seven hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
The Hornets return to Glennen Field at the Trusler Sports Complex on Wednesday to take on Washburn. First pitch of the third game in the Turnpike Tussle series is set for 5:00 p.m.
