EMPORIA STATE SOFTBALL SWEPT BY NORTHEASTERN STATE

Pair of two run losses

April 15, 2015 – Emporia State softball dropped two games Friday to Northeastern State. The Hornets lost 4-2 in game one and 3-1 in game two.

After a scoreless first two innings, Northeastern State took a 1-0 lead after the top of the third. Emporia State answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Cassidy Berry grounded out to short stop to send Caitlin VanVleck home and tie the game 1-1. Danielle Sprinkle followed with a single to center field, scoring Katie Yoakum and taking a 2-1 lead.

The RiverHawks scattered three runs through the fourth and fifth innings to claim a 4-2 win over the Hornets.

Caitlin VanVleck hit one for two in game one with one run scored. Katie Yoakum, Danielle Sprinkle, Eryn Stockman and Morgan Swisher all hit one for three. Yoakum had a run while Cassidy Berry and Sprinkle each with an RBI. With six strike outs and allowing only five hits, Stockman pitched a full 7.0 innings.

The RiverHawks took an early 2-0 lead over the Hornets in game two after the first inning. Northeastern State scored another run in the third inning, Emporia State answering with a run of their own in the bottom of the third after a Sprinkle sac fly to send Berry home. Both teams were scoreless the final four innings of the game.

Jacie Stephens went one for three in game two, Sarah Glass hitting one for two. Berry had a run scored while Sprinkle had an RBI. Holly Hinkel allowed only four hits through a full 7.0 innings pitched.

Emporia State will finish their regular season at home next weekend. The Hornets will face Northwest Missouri on Friday, April 22 at 4:00 p.m. and Missouri Western on Saturday, April 23 at 2:00 p.m.
