March 22, 2016-The #15 Hornet baseball team had a four game winning streak snapped in the bottom of the ninth inning in a 6-5 loss at Missouri Western on Tuesday afternoon.
HOME RUN DERBY EARLY
The Hornets took the lead in the third inning on an Evan Koehler two run home run and a Dalton Wheat sac fly that scored Daniel LaMunyon. The Griffons answered with a three run homer by Nick Gawley in the bottom of the third to tie the score.
ADDING RUNS
Levi Ashmore led off the fifth for Emporia State with a walk and went to third on single by Wade Hanna. Koehler advanced the runners with a ground out and LaMunyon drove in Ashmore with another ground out. Wheat reached on a throwing error that allowed Hanna to score for a 5-3 lead. Western answered with one run in the bottom of the fifth when Oscar Fisher hit a one out triple and scored on a sac fly by Cosimo Cannella to pull within 5-4.
NINTH INNING
The Hornets came close to adding an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Ryan McBroom worked a lead off walk, went to seconed on a passed ball and advanced to third on a fly out. Garrett Brummett came on in relief to start the eighth, pitching a scoreless eighth and getting a strikeout to start the ninth. He then walked the eighth and ninth hole hitters before lead off batter Landon Mason hit a double that tied the score. The Hornets intentionally walked Fisher to load the bases when Cannella hit a sac fly to center that scored the game winner.
THE NUMBERS
Koehler went one for two with his 13th home run of the season, two RBI and two walks. LaMunyon was two for four with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Wheat was two for three with an RBI. Jake Eikleberry went 4.0 innings to start the game, allowing three runs on four hits. Jason Tetuan threw 3.0 innings, giving up one run on two hits with two strikeouts. Brummett suffered his first loss of the year, allowing two runs on one hit with four walks and a strikeout.
UP NEXT
The Hornets will travel to Neb.-Kearney this weekend for a three game set with the Lopers. Due to weather concerns the series will start on Friday with the schedule of games still to be determined.
