EMPORIA STATE SOFTBALL SWEPT ON DAY ONE OF APPLE MARKET CLASSIC

Hornets fall in extra innings in game one, shut out in game two

March 18, 2016-Emporia State began play in the Apple Market Classic with a pair of losses.  The Hornets lost 4-3 in eight innings against Sioux Falls and fell 8-0 in five innings to Augustana. 

VS. SIOUX FALLS
The Hornets took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fifth when Marly Carmona walked to lead off the inning and eventually scored on a sac fly by Caitlin VanVleck.  In the seventh Morgan Swisher scored on a Sarah Glass single to center for a 2-0 lead. 
Eryn Stockman took a no hitter into the fifth inning and had allowed only three hits going into the bottom of the seventh.  The first three Sioux Falls batters singled to cut the lead to 2-1.  A fielder's choice and bunt single loaded the bases and the Cougars scored the tying run on a passed ball.  Another walk loaded the bases before the Hornets were able to get fielder's choices with an out at home and second to send the game to extra innings.
Erica Harper singled in Danielle Sprinkle, who had been placed on second in the international tie breaker, with a go ahead run in the top of the eighth. The Cougars got a single and double to in the bottom of the eighth with two runs scoring on the double for the 4-3 win.

VS. AUGUSTANA
Augustana scored five runs in the fourth to break open a 1-0 game and then added two runs in the fifth to envoke the run rule in an 8-0 loss by the Hornets.  Emporia State was held to just one hit in the game, a single by Sarah Glass in the fourth.

UP NEXT
The Hornets will play Minnesota State and Wayne State on Saturday in St. Joseph, Mo.
