COACH BOB FORNELLI PICKS UP 800TH CAREER WIN WITH 3-1 VICTORY OVER NEWMAN

Hornets improve to 10-3 on the season

March 1, 2016 - The #30 Hornets improved to 10-3 on the season Tuesday afternoon with a 3-1 win over Newman University. Coach Bob Fornelli earned his 800th career win in his 20th season as a four-year head coach. Fornelli is now 800-326 in his career, a .711 win percentage.

SLOW START
The first pitch of the game was sent over the fence in center field to put Newman up 1-0. That was the only run the Jets would score the rest of the day.

BATS COME ALIVE
The Hornets would get on the board in the bottom of the third inning, scoring two runs to take the lead 2-1. Ryan McBroom got the bats started for Emporia State, doubling to right field with one out. He was followed by a Daniel LaMunyon single through the right side, advancing McBroom to third. Levi Ashmore singled through the right side to send in McBroom and tying the game 1-1. Ashmore found himself in a rundown between first and second, distracting the Jets long enough to score LaMunyon, giving the Hornets their first lead at 2-1.

SEALING THE DEAL
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning and LaMunyon on third, Evan Koehler singled to right field, bringing in LaMunyon and the final run of the game.

BY THE NUMBERS
LaMunyon went two for four with two runs on the day. Dalton Wheat was two for three while McBroom, Wade Hanna, Derek Francis, and Koehler all went one for three. Ashmore and Koehler each had an RBI for the Hornets. Jake Eikleberry picked up the win pitching five innings allowing three hits and one run and striking out five. Garrett Brummett finished the game, pitching four innings with eight strike outs allowing only three hits. The two pitchers combined for only three walks.

UP NEXT
