February 26, 2016-The #30 Hornets pounded out 18 hits on the way to a 13-3 win at Pittsburg State on Friday afternoon.
EARLY INNINGS
The Hornets loaded the bases in the top of the first only to see the threat stopped by an inning ending double play. The Gorillas would get a lead off double in the bottom of the inning but there would be no scoring until the bottom of the third inning. Pitt State scored two runs on four hits in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead.
MIDDLE INNINGS
Emporia State answered with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth. Alex White singled down the left field line and Wade Hanna was able to score thanks to an error on the Gorilla left fielder. Taylor Steen then singled in White to tie the game at 2-2. The Hornets would take the lead on a bases loaded error by the second basemen in the top of the fifth. Emporia State took control with RBI singles from Levi Ashmore and Evan Koehler along with a sac fly from BJ Dean to go up 6-2 in the sixth.Â
THE FINAL THREE
A Ryan McBroom triple in the seventh followed by a sac fly from Daniel LaMunyon gave the Hornets a 9-2 lead headed to the seventh inning stretch. Pitt State got one run back in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull within 9-3. Koehler hit a sac fly in the top of the ninth to get the run back and Dean hit a three run homer to give the Hornets a 13-3 lead headed into the bottom of the ninth.
THE NUMBERS
A trio of Hornets went three for five at the plate. Ryan McBroom scored three runs with two RBI, Levi Ashmore scored twice with an RBI and Alex White had two runs scored. Evan Koehler was two for four with two RBI and Taylor Steen went two for five with two runs scored and an RBI.
Tyler Stubblefield scattered nine hits over 7.0 innings, allowing three runs while striking out seven. Shane Davies worked a perfect eighth inning and Tevin Renken allowed two runners on an error and hit batter before getting three ground ball outs to end the game.
