HORNET SOFTBALL FALLS TO CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL IN MINNESOTA

Emporia State gives up eight unearned runs in 11-4 loss

February 20, 2016-Emporia State gave up eight unearned runs in an 11-4 loss to Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday at the Kelly Laas Indoor Invitational in St. Paul, Minn. 

The Hornets scored first when Cassidy Berry singled in Sara Glass in the bottom of the first inning.  The Golden Bears answered with five runs on one hit in the top of the second.  The big hit in the inning was a three RBI single by Justine Schattner with two outs following an error that had loaded the bases.  Concordia-St. Paul added two runs in the third and another unearned run in the fifth to take an 8-1 lead.  Emporia State got two runs back in the sixth when VanVleck scored on a sacrifice bunt by Bery and Jacie Stephens drove in Glass with a sinlge to cut the lead to 8-3.  Three errors led to three more Bear runs in the top of the seventh and Van Vleck hit a two out home run in the bottom of the seventh for the final score of 11-4

VanVleck was two for four with two runs and an RBI while Glass went one for three with two runs scored and was hit by a pitch.Berry was one for two with two RBI. Holly Hinkel pitched 4.0 innings, allowing seven runs on five hits with five walks and three strikeouts.  Only three of the seven runs were earned.

Emporia State will wrap up play in the Husky Dome on Sunday with games against Augustana and the host St. Cloud State starting at 8:00 a.m. in St. Cloud, Minn.
