EMPORIA STATE MEN'S BASKETBALL WINS TIGHT 73-71 GAME OVER SBU

February 10, 2016 - Charles McKinney had a steal with 1.4 seconds left to help seal a wild 73-71 win over Southwest Baptist Wednesday night in White Auditorium.

HOT, HOT, HOT
Both teams opened the game on fire with Southwest Baptist shooting .667 from the field and .750 from the three point arc while Emporia State connected on .500 from the field and .462 from behind the arc in the opening 20 minutes. The Bearcats jumped out to a 14-6 lead at the first media timeout.  The Hornets responded witha 12-0 run and took a 18-14 lead with 11:30 left in the half on back to back three-pointers from Jevon Taylor and Jay Temaat. Emporia State would lead by as many as eight in the first half before SBU scored the final five points of the period as the Hornets took a 45-42 lead into the lockerroom.

BACK AND FORTH
The second half was more back and forth with six lead changes.  A 6-2 run gave the Bearcats their first lead of the second half at 48-47 with 17:39 left.  They would push the lead to five on two occassions, the last at 63-58 with 8:46 remaining. A Terrence Moore put back with 3:54 left capped a 9-4 run and tied the score at 67 each.  Following a steal by Moore with 1:53 left Brandon Hall hit a step back jumper as the shot clock was expiring to give the Hornets a three point lead at 72-69 with 1:24 left. 

FINAL MINUTE
Logan Hovey got loose in the half court for a dunk with 52 seconds left to pull SBU with a point at 72-71.  The Bearcats got the ball back with 27 seconds left with a chance to get the road win.  Charles McKinney was able to strip Brian Patterson with two seconds left and was fouled with 1.4 remaining.  McKinney hit the first of two free throws to give Emporia State a 73-71 lead. Cartier Dean was able to pull the rebound for SBU with :01.0 left.  After a timeout the Bearcats three-quarter court pass was deflected and time ran out to give the Hornets the victory.

THE NUMBERS
Terrence Moore led Emporia State with 23 points and was joined in double figures by Charles McKinney with 13 points and Joshua Oswald with 11 points. Moore moved into the top five of career scoring at Emporia State with 1,523 points.

The Hornets will play their second to last road game of the regular season on Saturday at Lincoln.  Tip-off from Jason Gym in Jefferson City, Mo. is set for 3:30 p.m.
