FIVE HORNETS NAMED TO HANSEN FOOTBALL ALL-SUPER REGION 3 TEAM

Stastny and Vinson named first-team; Foote, Schankie and West earn third-team

FIVE HORNETS EARN DON HANSEN ALL-REGION HONORS

December 20, 2016-Emporia State is represented by five players on the 2016 Don Hansen Football Committee All-Super Region Three Team. Offensive guard Jarrett Stastny and defensive lineman Eddie Vinson earned first-team honors while receiver Mitchell Foote, linebacker Kole Schankie and cornerback AJ West were named to the third team.

Stastny was a first-team All-MIAA selection for the Hornets. He was a four time winner of the Hornets Squarehead Award as the top offensive lineman in a game this year.  He is a four time All-MIAA pick having earned first team honors in 2013 and 2016 and third time honors in 2014 and 2015.

Vinson was sixth in the MIAA in total sacks and eighth in total tackles for loss. He had a total of 40 tackles on teh season with 13.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks. He also had an interception and batted down two more passes at the line of scrimmage.

Foote led the MIAA with 75 receptions, 12 touchdown catches, and 1,016 receiving yards on the year. He was a unanimous first-team All-MIAA selection and ends his career ranked second at Emporia State with 215 catches and 30 receiving touchdowns while finishing with 2,594 receiving yards.

Shankie led the MIAA and was ranked third in the nation with seven interceptions. The seven interceptions are ranked fourth on the Emporia State single season list.  He had a team best 81 tackles on the season.

West had 44 tackles on the season with an interception, three pass break ups and a 35 yard fumble return for a touchdown. He was often assigned to the opposing teams top receiver and was rarely challenged.

The Don Hansen team carries out the legacy of long-time small college football advocate Don Hansen, who passed away at age 75 on Aug. 29, 2010. Hansen, from Brookfield, Ill., started and published Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette for three decades, selecting NCAA Division II All-America teams for the first time in 1988. Don Hansen's Football Gazette began selecting Division II All-Region squads in 2003.

The first-team and second-team All-Region selections advance to a national ballot from which the 2015 Don Hansen NCAA Division II All-America team will be named in February.

The Hornets were 11-2 on the season and advanced to the NCAA Playoffs for the second straight year and third time in the last four years.  Emporia State had an 11 game winning streak between a season opening loss to national champion Northwest Missouri and a loss in the second round of the playoffs to the Bearcats. Over the last two years the Hornets are 22-5 with four of the losses to the undefeated national champions.

Emporia State, who was ranked #10 in the final AFCA Division II Coaches Poll, is set to return 12 starters, seven on offense and five on defense, along with all of their specialists next year.
