November 12, 2016-The #4 Lady Hornets got a career high 15 rebounds from Tiana Moala as they outrebounded Southwestern Oklahoma State by 29 in an 87-65 season opening win in White Auditorium on Saturday night.
An 11-0 run from the end of the first quarter into the second gave Emporia State a 20 point lead at 35-15 and the lead would not drop below 14 points the rest of the night. The Lady Hornets took a 49-26 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Lady Dawgs started the second half on an 11-2 run to cut the lead to 51-37 with 7:13 left in the third quarter. A pair of fast break layups by Kelly Moten and Addie Lackey followed by a layup in the paint from Shelby Baker pushed the Emporia State lead back to 21 at 62-41 with 2:20 left in the third quarter.Â
A 7-0 run early in the fourth gave Emporia State their largest lead of the night at 77-49 on a three-pointer from Kyrstie Miller with 6:57 remaining. Southwestern Oklahoma closed the game on a 6-0 run over the final 1:38 for the final score.
Kyrstie Miller and Addie Lackey both scored 14 points and Kelly Moten added ten to lead a balanced scoring attack for the Lady Hornets. Miller added six rebounds, four blocks, two steals and an assist while Moten had six rebounds, six assists, a block and a steal. Lackey had seven assists, three blocks and two steals as well. Moala had seven points and three blocks to go with her career high 15 rebounds.
Moala's 15 rebounds are the most by a Lady Hornet since Kathryn Flott pulled 15 against Washburn last year and came in just 21 minutes of action.
The Lady Hornets will wrap up play in the MIAA-GAC Challenge on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. against Oklahoma Baptist in White Auditorium. The Bison fell to Missouri Southern 83-81 on a jumper by the Lions' Chelsey Henry with 3.3 seconds left.
