Box Score October 9, 2016 - The Emporia State soccer team defeated Missouri Southern 3-0 on Sunday afternoon at the ESU Pitch for their third shutout in a row.
The first goal came at the 20:29 mark in the first period when Emily Haselwood converted on a header into the bottom right corner of the goal off a Maddie Taylor corner kick. Haselwood now has three goals on the season. The Hornets had four corner kicks in the first period compared to the Lions one corner kick.
The second and third goals came in the second period when Emporia State outshot Missouri Southern 14 to eight. At the 65:50 mark Maria Walden had a goal into the far corner from ten yards out, assisted by Shelby Keyes. The goal was Walden's second of the season. The third and final goal came at the 83:16 mark when Savannah Hallier scored from about 12 yards out, again assisted by Keyes.
The final shot count was Emporia State 20 shots, Missouri Southern 12 shots. Goalie Astrid Buttner-Costa had five saves on the day and improved to 3-1-0 on the season.
Emporia State will finish their four game home stand on Friday, Oct. 14 at 3:00 p.m. against #2 Central Missouri followed by a game on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 2:00 p.m. against Lindenwood.
