EMPORIA STATE SOCCER WINS TURNPIKE TUSSLE

1-0 win in Topeka clinches MIAA Tourney berth

October 28, 2016-Maddie Taylor scored in the 25th minute to give Emporia State a 1-0 win at Washburn on Friday night to secure a spot in the MIAA Tournament.
 
Tiffany Jones sent a cross towards the goal that Taylor redirected in for the game winning goal with 20:24 left in the first half as the Hornets won their third straight match.
 
Emporia State outshot Washburn 6-5 and had the only two corner kicks of the defensive struggle. Yadira Rivera had four saves and posted her fourth shutout of the season.  She is third in career saves in MIAA history with 372 saves in 67 matches.
 
With the win, the Hornets improve to 13-0-1 in their last 14 matches in which they have scored first.  They are now 8-7-2 and a win in their final regular season game will assure Emporia State of four straight non-losing seasons for the first time in school history.
 
Emporia State will wrap up the regular season on Sunday, October 30 at Neb.-Kearney.  Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. at Cope Stadium in Kearney, Neb.  With a win the Hornets will play host to a first round MIAA Tournament game for the first time in school history on Wednesday, November 2 at the EHS Pitch.
