October 2, 2016-Emporia State snapped a three game losing skid and handed Central Oklahoma their first MIAA loss with a 2-0 win in Edmond, Okla. on Sunday afternoon. It was the first MIAA win for the Hornets.
The teams battled through a scoreless first half although the Bronchos outshot the Hornets 12-2 in the opening frame. In her first start this season, Astrid Buttner Costa had five saves in the first half in goal for Emporia State.
In the 57th minute Emily Haselwood connected off a corner kick from Maddie Taylor to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead. Nicole Dietrich sent a cross in the 72nd minute and Kennedy Hoffman converted after a scrum in front of the goal to give Emporia State a 2-0 lead.
For the match Emporia State was outshot 16-4, but the Hornets converted two of their three shots on goal while Buttner Costa recorded seven saves.
The Hornets are back in action on Friday, October 7 against Southwest Baptist. Kickoff from the ESU Pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
