January 9, 2016-Emporia State battled back from a 12 point deficit with 11:28 left but Jay Temaat's desperation three point attempt hit the rim and bounced off at the buzzer as Northeastern State won 76-74.
FIRST HALF
The RiverHawks jumped out to an 11-4 lead to start the game and led 14-7 with 14:35 left in the half. The Hornets went on a 12-2 run to take a 19-16 lead with 11:53 remaining. Northeastern State took their biggest lead of the first half a 33-25 with 3:53 remaining before Emporia State ended the half on a 13-3 run. Brandon Hall's jumper with five seconds left gave the Hornets a 38-36 lead at the break.
SECOND HALF
Northeastern State scored the first five points of the second half and would build a 12 point lead at 57-45 with 11:28 remaining. A Josh Pedersen three-pointer and a pair of Charles McKinney fast break layups cut the lead to 57-52 and forced a RiverHawk timeout with 10:17 left. A three-pointer from Temaat with 6:31 left tied the game at 63 and neither team would take more than a five point lead the rest of the game.
END GAME
Trey Mohair hit one of two free throws with 28.8 seconds left to make it 74-69 before McKinney banked in a three with 18.5 seconds left. Montre Williams hit a pair of free throws with 11.4 seconds left and then Terrence Moore scored with 5.2 remaining. Micah Swank was able to force a tie up and give the Hornets the ball with :00.5 left. Temaat was able to get off a 25 footer from the wing at the buzzer that hit the front of the rim and bounced off.
THE NUMBERS
Charles McKinney led all scorers with 14 points as 11 of the 12 Hornets that played scored at least two points. He was joined in double figures by Terrence Moore with 11 points while Brandon Hall and Josh Oswald each scored nine points As a team the Hornets hit 11 of 18 three-pointers but were just 11 of 22 from the free throw line.
