January 13, 2016 - Emporia State broke a four game losing streak overall and a six game streak to Northwest Missouri with a 70-63 win over the league leading Bearcats on Wednesday night in White Auditorium. With 24 points Terrence Moore passed Andy Uphoff and tied tied Sean Robbins for seventh in career scoring at Emporia State with 1,396 points.
EARLY GOING
The league leading Bearcats jumped out to an 8-2 lead and led 13-6 with 14:09 left in the first half. The Hornets then went on an 11-0 run to take a 17-13 lead with 10:49 remaining. Northwest Missouri used an 11-2 run to turn a four point deficit into a 35-30 lead with 2:09 left in the half. The teams traded baskets for the final 2:09 as the Bearcats took a five point lead into the break.
STRONG SECOND HALF
The Bearcats built the lead up to eight points at 48-40 with 12:04 remaining in the game. The Hornets then went on another 11-0 run to take a three-point lead on a Terrence Moore layup with 8:25 left. Northwest Missouri would tie the game at 53 with 5:49 left but Jevon Taylor answered with a three-pointer to give Emporia State the lead for good.
FINISHING IT OUT
AFter struggling from the free throw line much of the season, Emporia State hit seven of nine from the stripe in the final 4:30 to seal the win. The Hornets took their biggest lead of the night at 70-61 with 9.8 seconds left on a pair of free throws from Moore before Anthony Woods hit a layup with 4.3 left for the final margin of 70-63.
THE NUMBERS
All 12 Hornets that played either scored or got a rebound on the night led by Terrence Moore with 24 points. Charles McKinney joined him in double figures with 13 points and a team high six rebounds. Emporia State shot 50% from the field and hit ten of 12 from the free throw line. Northwest played just seven players with all five starters logging at least 30 minutes.
UP THE CHART
Terrence Moore moved into a tie for eighth in career scoring at Emporia State with 1,396 points. He passed Andy Uphoff (1,373 points from 1989-93) and tied Sean Robbins (1990-91, 93-95) for eight place.
