TURNPIKE TUSSLEEmporia State begins MIAA non-conference play this weekend at Washburn on Friday before coming home on Sunday to play Ft. Hays State. Sunday's match will take place on the ESU Pitch and will be the first on-campus match for the Hornets since the 2012 season.

LAST TIME OUTEmporia State had a corner kick and shot on goal with under a minute left but could no convert it in a 2-1 loss at Texas A&M-Commerce on Sunday in Commerce, Texas. The Lions scored first, getting on the board just 4:30 into the match. The Hornets answered in the 25th minute when Grace Linton converted in the box to tie the score at 1-1. A&M-Commerce took the lead with 2:06 left in the half on a penalty kick. That would be the end of the scoring as neither team scored in the second half.

THE COACHESBryan Sailer is 26-37-15 in his fifth year at Emporia State and is the winningest coach in program history. He is 11-9-5 over his last 25 matches dating back to 2013. He is 4-1-2 against Washburn and 0-3-3 against Ft. Hays State.
Chris Jones was named the Washburn head coach on July 10, 2015. He is 0-2-2 in his first season. This is his first meeting with Emporia State
Craig Shaw is in his fifth season at Fort Hays State with a record of 41-34-7. He is 3-0-3 against Emporia State.

SCOUTING THE HORNETSThe Hornets have had four different scorers in the first four games of the season. The Hornets have attempted 58 goals to their opponents 39 and have outscored opponents 9-3 this year. Amelie Heun is the leading scorer for the Hornets with four goals, followed by Grace Linton with three, Jacki Martinek, and Jaide Allenbrand each with one goal.

SCOUTING THE ICHABODSWashburn is 0-2-2 on the season. The Ichabods dropped their first game in a 2-1 battle with Minot State, then went on to tie their next two games in two no score contests before losing Wednesday to Newman 2-1. Washburn has attempted 30 goals to their opponents 56 in the first four games of the season and have been outscored 4-2 in those games. Cadence Bourne and Bailey Wobig each have one goal for the Ichabods.

SERIES HISTORYThis will be the 24th meeting between the two teams in the soccer version of the Turnpike Tussle. Washburn leads the all-time series 7-12-4 but Emporia State is 4-1-2 over the last seven matches and has not lost to the Ichabods since 2012.

SCOUTING THE TIGERSFort Hays is 1-3-0 on the season. The Tigers have attempted 42 shots to their opponents 40 being outscored by opponents 4-2 overall this season. Jordan Hester and Kylee Loneker each have one goal for the Tigers this season.

UP NEXTEmporia State will head to Missouri next weekend to take on the Central Missouri on Friday, September 25 in Warrensburg, Mo. Then on Sunday, September 27, Emporia State will finish the weekend in St. Charles, Mo. against Lindenwood.
