EMPORIA STATE SOCCER DROPS FIRST GAME OF SEASON

2-1 loss at Texas A&M-Commerce is first loss for Hornets

September 13, 2015-Emporia State had a corner kick and shot on goal with under a minute left but could no convert it in a 2-1 loss at Texas A&M-Commerce on Sunday in Commerce, Texas.  It is the first loss of the season for the Hornets.

BACK AND FORTH
The Lions scored first, getting on the board just 4:30 into the match when Vicky Back scored her fifth goal in four games for a 1-0 TAMU-Commerce lead.  The Hornets answered in the 25th minute when Grace Linton converted in the box to tie the score at 1-1. A&M-Commerce took the lead with 2:06 left in the half on a penalty kick from Savannah Grasser. That would be the end of the scoring as neither team scored in the second half.

FINAL MINUTES
Yadira Rivera made two saves in the final ten minutes to keep the Hornets within a goal.  With under a minute left Emporia State got a corner kick from Jacki Martinek and Maria Walden's shot in the box was saved by Commerce keeper Courtnie Northern.

TRAVEL TIME
The Hornets were playing their second match in 44 hours, 400 miles from their match on Friday in Plainview, Texas. For comparison the halftime of Emporia State's football game with Central Missouri lasted 41 hours.

UP NEXT
The Turnpike Tussle is up next for the Hornets as they travel to Topeka, Kan. on Friday to take on Washburn.  Kick-off is set for 6:00 p.m. at Yaeger Stadium in Moore Bowl.
