April 16, 2015-Stephanie Goodwin had two hits, including a two run home run, to tie Megan Davison's Emporia State and MIAA career hits record as the #17 Hornets split a double header at William Jewell on Thursday in Liberty, Mo. Emporia State lost the first game 6-2 and came back to win 11-5 in the second game.
The Hornets took a 1-0 on a Brenda Novelo home run in the second inning of the first game. The Cardinals scored two runs to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Goodwin led off the top of the fourth with a walk and later scored on a single from Jessica Gragg. William Jewell retook the lead with a single run in the bottom of the fourth and added two unearned runs in the fifth. They got their final run on a solo home run from Faith Song in the sixth.
Kaitlyn Caston took the loss, allowing six runs, four earned, on 13 hits with four strikeouts. The Hornets got two hits and an RBI from Gragg, a home run from Novelo and doubles from Taylor Zordel and Caston as they were limited to just five hits.
Emporia State got off to a strong start in the night cap as Zordel led off with a single and then scored on Goodwin's two run homer. Jewell got a solo home run in the bottom of the second to cut the lead in half before the Hornet offense got on track in the fourth. Gragg led off with a home run and Caitlyn VanVleck followed with a single. Novelo then walked and went to third on a pair of wild pitches before scoring on Jacie Stephens single. Dani Sprinkle singled and after an out Sydney Owens hit her first career double to drive in two runs and give the Hornets a 6-1 lead. The Cardinals got a run back in the fifth and had two on when Kelsee Henry relieved Eryn Stockman in the circle for the Hornets. She got out of the jam without letting a run score and Emporia State answered with five scores in the top of the sixth. Stephens started things with a lead off walk and went to second when pinch hitter Hanna Weingartner reached on an error. Zordel then reached on a fielder's choice to put runners at first and third. Owens delivered and RBI single before Goodwin laced a single for her 275th career hit and an RBI. Caston and Gragg each followed with RBI singles and Novelo hit an RBI double with two outs to give the Hornets an 11-2 lead. Jewell got a three run homer from Madi Giles in the bottom of the sixth to hold off the run rule. Henry then retired the side in order in the seventh
Stockman picked up the win going 4.1 innings while allowing two runs on eight hits. Henry worked the final 2.2 and gave up three runs on five hits for the save. Every starter had at least one hit for Emporia State with Owens going three for four with three RBI and a run scored. Goodwin was two for three with a home run, two walks, three RBI and two runs scored.
The Hornets are scheduled to play at Northeastern State on Saturday in Talequah, Okla. First pitch is set for 12 noon.
NOTES
In addition to Goodwin tying the Emporia State record for hits, she had three runs to pass Jessie Wiard and is now third on the Hornets career list with 189 runs scored.
Zordel had two hits on the day and is now tied with Miranda Campbell for third on the Emporia State career list with 269 hits. She also had her string of consecutive stolen bases snapped at 47.
