March 28, 2015-Stephanie Goodwin had three doubles to break the Emporia State career record in that category as the #11 Hornets swept Missouri Southern on Saturday at the Trusler Sports Complex. The Hornets won game one 9-1 in six innings and then took game two 7-4.
Emporia State scored four runs, capped by Dani Sprinkle's two run homer, in the bottom of the first to take control of the matinee from the beginning. Dru Coleman hit a solo homer for Missouri Southern in the top of the second before the Hornets added two more runs in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. In the bottom of the sixth Taylor Zordel had an RBI single to put Emporia State up 7-1. After a Caitlyn VanVleck single Goodwin laced a double into the right field corner to clear the bases and envoke the run rule.
Goodwin went two for four with three RBI and a run scored while Zordel was two for three with two runs and two RBI. Kautlin Caston went the distance in the circle, giving up one run on four hits with six strike outs and just two walks.
Zordel gave the Hornets an early lead in game two as well. She led off with a single and went to second on a passed ball. She then stole third and came home when the throw from catcher bounced into the Hornet dugout. Zordel followed that with a two RBI single in the second and would score on Goodwin's RBI single to give Emporia State a 4-0 lead after two. The Hornets went up 6-0 on back-to-back-to-back doubles by VanVleck, Goodwin and Jessica Gragg in the fourth inning. Goodwin's double tied Angela Mahan's career record of 64 doubles set from 2008-11. The Lions scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to pull within 6-2. Goodwin led off the bottom of the sixth with her record breaking 65th double of her career and would later score on a wild pitch to give the Hornets a 7-2 lead going into the seventh inning. Mo. Southern scored two more in the top of the seventh before Eryn Stockman got a strike out to end the game.
Goodwin was three for four with two runs and two RBI and Zordel went two for four with two runs and two RBI to again pace the Hornet offense. Stockman scattered ten hits over 7.0 innings with three strike outs to pick up her tenth win of the season.
Emporia State will hit the road next weekend for games at Southwest Baptist and Central Missouri. First pitch in Bolivar, Mo. on Friday is set for 1:00 p.m.
