March 20, 2015-The #11 Emporia State softball team split two games on Friday at the Apple Market Classic in St. Joseph, Mo. The Hornets dropped a non-conference match-up with Pittsburg State 4-0 and came back with a 4-0 win over Upper Iowa.
Emporia State was held to four hits, one each by the top four batters in the lineup, as they were shut out for the first time this year by Pittsburg State in the matinee. Kaitlyn Caston gave up four runs, three of them earned, on eight hits with four strike outs as she suffered her second loss of the year.
The Hornets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second game on a sac fly from Jessica Gragg and an RBI single by Brenda Novelo i the first. Taylor Zordel had an RBI single in the second to push the lead to 3-0. Caitlyn VanVleck gave the Hornets a 4-0 lead in the seventh with an RBI single.
VanVleck was three for four with an RBI and a run scored. Kelsee Henry tossed her third shutout of the season giving up six hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
The Hornets are back in action in St. Joseph at noon on Saturday against Northern State before taking on Concordia-St. Paul at 4:00 p.m.
