Lady Hornets improve to 18-2 with 62-55 win over Washburn

February 4, 2015-Merissa Quick scored 14 points and blocked seven shots as the #6 Lady Hornets defeated Washburn 62-55 on Wednesday night in White Auditorium. With the win Emporia State improves to 18-2 on the season and 11-2 in the MIAA.

Quick started quickly as she gave Emporia State a 2-0 lead just 16 seconds into the game.  The Ichabods would tie the score on a pair of Jayna Smith free throws 27 seconds later.  Kathryn Flott scored in the paint off an assist from Quick to give the Lady Hornets a 4-2 lead with 19:07 left and from that point on would never trail. A 9-3 run gave Emporia State a nine point lead with 9:41 left in the half at 20-11.

The Ichabods answered with an 8-2 run of their own to close within 22-19 with 5:54 left.  Kelly Moten scored with 2:16 left to give the Lady Hornets a 28-25 lead, but that would be the final points of the half for Emporia State.  Casyn Buchman scored with 1:11 left to cut the lead to one and then hit one of two free throws with 12 seconds left to send the teams to the locker rooms tied at 28.

The Lady Hornets scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 35-28 lead with 17:16 remaining.  They would push the lead to 11 on a pair of Amber Vandiver free throws with 13:21 left to lead 44-33.  Washburn cut the lead to five at 49-44 with 7:58 left.  A steal by Moten led to a jumper from Kelsey Barnwell that forced a Washburn time out with 7:28 left and Emporia State leading 51-44.  Barnwell missed a three pointer on the Lady Hornets next trip, but Moten blocked a shot on the Ichabods ensuing possession and found Barnwell for a dagger three pointer that put Emporia State ahead by ten and forced another Washburn timeout.

Washburn would cut the lead to six on three occassions in the final four minutes, but the Lady Hornets went five of six from the line in that time to ice the win.

Moten had 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals and Addie Lackey scored 12 points to join Quick in double figures.
