EMPORIA STATE MEN USE BUZZER BEATER TO BEAT WASHBURN

Jay Temaat hits 30 footer for the win

February 4, 2015-Emporia State's Jay Temaat hit a 30-footer at the buzzer to give the Hornets a 62-59 win over Washburn on Wednesday night in White Auditorium.  Temaat finished the game with 14 points and a career high seven rebounds for the Hornets.

The way the game started it did not look like the Hornets would need any last second heroics.  The Hornets jumped out to a 12-0 lead and held the Ichabods without a point for the first 5:34 of the game.  Emporia State would pust the lead to 22-4, forcing Washburn to use their second timeout of the first half with 10:13 left.  The Ichabods would chip away at the lead and pulled to within ten on a David Salach dunk with 26 seconds left.  Terrence Moore hit a floater in the lane with just over a second left to give the Hornets a 34-22 lead at the break.

Washburn scored the first seven points of the second half to pull within five points with 16:51 left.  Emporia State responded with a 10-0 run and went up 44-29 on a Micah Swank three-pointer with 14:48 left to force another Washburn timeout.  The Hornets led 55-44 with 7:21 left when the Ichabods went on a 12-1 run over the next 6:52 to cut the lead to one with 28.8 seconds left.  Washburn went ten of 15 from the free throw line during the run.  Moore hit a pair of free throws with 24.4 seconds remaing to give the Hornets a 59-56 lead. Algie Key hit one of two free throws with 22.2 left to pull Washburn within two at 59-57.  Michael Harris missed the front end of a one and one with 10.6 left for Emporia State and Key went coast to coast for the lay-up to tie the score at 59 with just over four seconds left.  The Hornets quickly inbounded the ball to Temaat in front of the Washburn bench. He took the ball across court and launched a shot from just past the Power E at center court that banked in. After a video review to make sure, the shot was ruled good and the Hornets celebrated their second straight MIAA victory and second straight win over Washburn.

Temaat was joined in double figures by Moore with 13 points and Micah Swank with 12 points.  Josh Pedersen had a game high nine rebounds, with eight on the offensive glass.

Emporia State is back in action on Saturday when they travel to Hays, Kan. to take on Ft. Hays State.  Tip-off from Gross Coliseum is set for 4:00 p.m.
