October 24, 2014 - Emporia State swept Pittsburg State Saturday night, 25-16, 31-29, 25-22, at home. This win snapped a seven game losing streak for the Hornets.
GREAT START
The Hornets led the entire first set, ending it 25-16 on a Gorilla attack error. Emporia State had a .355 hitting efficiency in the set with only three hitting errors.
CLOSE SECOND
In the second set there were 20 tied scores and seven lead changes, leading to a 31-29 Hornet victory. Emporia State and Pittsburg were tied at 7-7 after a Jamie Hauptman kill when the Gorillas went on a 5-0 run to lead 12-7. The Hornets came back to tie it several times before the first set point for the Gorillas 23-24. Emporia State then battled off another two set points for the Gorillas to finally take their first set point at 27-26 off a Gorilla attack error. The final set point came at a Hornet 30-29 advantage when Danika Burton finished the set with a kill to end it 31-29.
THIRD SET
The third and final set had 16 tied scores and six lead changes until the Hornets pulled away to win 25-22. The final tie came at 20-20 when Emporia State would end the match on a kill from Torrie Rupe, finishing a 5-2 run.
SETTING THE MIDDLES
Sydney Hartman had a double-double on the night with 25 assists and 10 digs. Kelly Holden had a team high 23 digs, Torrie Rupe and Julia Joseph adding 10 digs and nine digs, respectively. The two middles, Danika Burton and Tatum Graves, led the Hornets in kills for the night. Danika Burton had a team high 14 kills for .387 hitting with four block assists. Tatum Graves added 11 kills on .417 hitting.
