EMPORIA STATE SOCCER GETS SHUTOUT OF SBU IN RESCHEDULED MATCH

Hornets post 2-0 win over Bearcats in Kansas City

October 20, 2015-After having their match in Bolivar called due to rain with Emporia State leading Southwest Baptist 2-1 last week, the Hornets posted a 2-0 win over the Bearcats in the rescheduled match on Tuesday on the campus of UMKC.  The victory gives Emporia State eight wins on the season, matching the third most regular season wins in the program's history.

BACK STORY
The Hornets were leading 2-1 on October 16 in Bolivar, Mo. in the 56th minute when the match was called due to lightning.  Under NCAA rules a match must complete 70 minutes to count as a contest.  The skies started to darken over halftime and the teams were able to get 11:13 into the second half before rain and lightning forced a delay.  The teams waited it out for over two hours.  The players retook the field to warm up a little after 6:30 p.m. with rain still falling and shortly after play resumed a lightning strike forced the cancellation of the match.

GOING TO KANSAS CITY
The teams agreed to meet on a neutral site to save travel costs and restarted the match from the beginning at Durwood Stadium on the campus of UMKC.

TODAY'S GAME
Emporia State lived on the edge for most of the first half as Southwest Baptist outshot the Hornets 14-3 in the opening 45 minutes.  Keeper Astrid Buttner Costa, who was playing in place of last year's MIAA Goalkeeper of the Year Yadira Rivera, had seven saves in the first half.  The tide turned in the second half as the Hornets outshot the Bearcats 13-6 after halftime.  Amelie Heun put Emporia State on the board with a header off Jacki Martinek's corner in the 63rd minute.  Maria Walden gave the Hornets an insurance goal with 10:32 left in the match on an unassisted goal.

NUMBERS
Amelie Heun now has 12 goals and 28 points on the season to rank second on the Emporia State single season lists in both categories.
Astrid Buttner Costa had nine saves to post her first solo shutout.
The eight wins in the regular season are the most since going 8-7-3 before finishing up a 9-8-3 in 2013.  It is the fourth most wins in a season behind ten win seasons in 2001 and 2004 and the nine wins in 2013.

UP NEXT
The Hornets travel to Neb.-Kearney on Friday to continue their road trip.  Kick-off at Cope Stadium in Kearney, Neb. is set for 7:00 p.m.
